Jan Zdvořák’s abstract work originated in the milieu of graffiti, but today he deals more with the reinterpretation of American postwar painting, minimalist sculpture, and interwar constructivism.
aabb, 600 x 240 cm, various techniques, 2023
Straddling the line between painting and sculpture, his work is characterized by its intuitiveness, improvisation, joy from the very act of creation, and close connection to the specific site in which it is presented. Zdvořák often makes use of large formats which are entirely filled by paintings; however, he describes himself not as a painter but as someone who constructs and sculpts images. He relies primarily on the visual efficacy of his work, yet he also incorporates a conceptual background layer based on a dialogue with older forms and styles.
