The work of sculptor Tomáš Roubal critically responds to current social issues and political events, often thematizing the reduction of humans to a petty commercial commodity.
Burnout series, 22 x 46 x 16.5 cm, steel, 2021, photo artist's archive
The artist’s work is a kind of new existentialism, biting but also humorous, with a lightness that sets it apart from the art-historical direction of the ’40s and ’50s. Roubal’s work is characterized by a simple and visually comprehensible, almost cartoonish style. He works primarily with metal, and his steel works are usually created using a time-consuming method of layering welding wire. These are processual works in which the seemingly endless process of creation itself critically responds to the commodification of time.
Parasite series, Ritalin, 244x30x24cm, steel, 2024, photo artist's archive
Roubal graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. He has had numerous solo exhibitions, mainly in independent Czech galleries. His work is represented in many private collections in the Czech Republic.
